Redgate Hall, Woolsingham

Redgate Hall is a handsome building situated on a hillside overlooking Wolsingham in Weardale. It is 150 years old but received a reburbishment 2 years ago under the auspices of the current owners, Richard and Barbara Painter.

Five rooms within the refurbishment were the main en-suite, bathroom, guest bathroom, downstairs w/c and the main kitchen. A building of this standard naturally demanded appropriate materials and of course workmanship, and Paul was commissioned to carry out the work thanks to the recommendation of a Painter family member who had previously commissioned tiling work from Paul.

The materials used by Paul at Redgate Hall were travertine, slate and porcelain. The porcelain wall and floor tiles were given beautiful borders, and the main en-suite benefited from the highest grade travertine. Sheets of mosaic travertine were carefully cut and used as picture frame borders on the floor, while inside Paul created a brick lock pattern. The downstairs toilet was given a chequerboard pattern using traditional fired earth tiles, and the kitchen was fitted with a large format slate-tiled floor. Paul's most technically impressive work was probably in the entrance lobby, where he lifted the original Victorian tiles in readiness for maintenance work to be carried out. He then reinstated them in such a way that they do not look disturbed.
